Walmart Applications Tips For Teens

One of the most common questions I hear from teens all the time is, “How old do you have to be to work at Wal Mart?”  Well, before you set your sights on  Walmart applications you should know the general age requirement to work at WM in almost every state in the US is 16 years of age.

As a matter of fact, there are quite a few restrictions if you’re a teenager looking to work here but the good news is once you turn 18, you are free to work where you want and however many hours you desire!

Teenagers under 18 can perform part-time work when school is in session as long as the work is not deemed hazardous, which means if you are a teen you can probably work at most any restaurant or retail job part-time.  You can’t work full-time because by federal law, you are attending school and you are a minor

However, on Saturdays and Sundays, minors are allowed to work 8 hour shifts.  Obviously, the whole purpose of these laws is to allow adequate time for childrens’ studies.

Before submitting an application for Wal Mart, it’s always best to consult with your career counselor at your high school to find out what the state laws are regarding employment for minors; in some states, you are required to obtain “working papers” from your state to be allowed to work.

It’s also good to know when you apply at Walmart that if you’re under 18, you will only be allowed to work until 10:00PM.

To have the best chance at getting hired, make sure you fill in your online Walmart applications with as many different positions as possible such as cashier, stocker, etc.  Also, put in your application as many “available shifts” as possible.

Walmart Application And Interview Success Tips

While you’re filling out a Walmart application you’ll probably be thinking about the eventual job interview that follows, so a great idea would be to prepare yourself for what’s about to come.  By being prepared with a basic idea of how to present yourself and interact with the interviewer, your anxiety level will lessen and you’ll put yourself in a much better position to land the job.

Follow these steps for a successful interview after you apply at Wal Mart:

1.  Dress appropriately by removing excessive or distasteful jewelry (by conservative standards) such as excessive earrings or other body piercings.  A sure way to fail your job interview is to look out of the ordinary.  The main goal during an interview is to stand out above the rest with your personality, not your arm tattoos or nose rings!

Wear conservative, clean, neatly-pressed clothing.  Remember, the majority of people who hire and fire like to see a high degree of normalcy in the way applicants dress and carry themselves.

2.  Make absolutely certain you arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled interview.  If you show up earlier, don’t enter just yet; you don’t want to appear overly anxious or desperate.  If you show up 10 minutes late, start praying!

3.  You wouldn’t believe how many people submit Walmart online job applications, get the call back, and ruin their interview when they allow their cell phones to ring incessantly, interrupting the interviewer’s precious time!  This is not only inappropriate; it shows a lack of respect.

If I were the interviewer the first thing that would come to mind would be, “I can’t hire this person, he or she’s going to spend all her time on the phone while at work.”

Turn the cell phones off while interviewing.

4.  Let the interviewer talk and finish their questions before you answer; never interrupt an interviewer in mid-sentence.  Think about the question before you answer, and paint yourself in a positive light with sincere words.

5.  Never talk negatively about your former employer or any other employee; doing so will introduce negativity into the picture and you’ll leave them wondering if you are the problem.

6.  Ask questions during the interview so you don’t appear to be a “Know-It-All,” and to appear as if you are interested in the job.

7.  The greatest tip to gain an advantage over other applicants after submitting a Walmart job application is to be yourself.  It’s perfectly alright to show a sense of humor, just don’t overdo it with the jokes!  Show the interviewer you have a good personality, and you’ll have a leg up on more than half the other applicants (this is because people tend to get nervous and clam up during interviews!).

Submitting a Walmart application and going through the hiring process doesn’t have to be so difficult and nerve-wracking.  If you prepare yourself, you’ll be far less nervous and you’ll get through the interview with flying colors.
